We will explain to you both roofs to give you an idea while you choose or select a roof.

Gable Roofing their Types, Advantages and Disadvantages

Gable roof has a minimum one flat end that is called a gable. They are not made of roofing materials instead the triangular ends are made up of siding, stone and the material that is used on the home exterior. Gable roof may have one or more than one gable. Gable roofs are most commonly constructed in cold climate areas.

Gable roofs has many types which are as follows:

  • Open gable.

  • Box gable.

  • Cross gable.

  • Gambrel gable.

  • Saltbox gable.

Open Gable in Gable Roof: Open gable roofs are made of home siding material. They are also known as classic gable roofs.

Box Gable Roofing: This type of roofing is enclosed and extended, and they are like standard gable roofs.

Cross Gable roof: As we already get the idea from this roof name, cross gable roofs are made when you combine at least two gable sections, at a right angle where the other angle touches with the right one, you will have a cross gable roof.

Gambrel roofs, a Gable Version of a Mansard Roof: They are shaped in the form of slopes instead of a triangle. They are more complex in shape as well as in their making process is complex too. This type of roofing we usually see on barns.

Saltbox roofs: This type of gable roof is also known as a simple roof. They are formed as asymmetrical planes with one side shorter and the other side has a longer edge. They are different from other roofs as the end has one roofing plane where the top roof edge meets the top of the back wall. When you have a saltbox roof your house results in having a larger space than those roofing who have a similar or same structural design.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Gable Roof

Gable roofs not only look good, but they come with a lot of advantages as well. They are better for those people who live in an area where snowfall is heavy than other areas as they perform better in snowy areas. They are not expensive, but they can not hold strong wind. Some of the gable roofs are hard to build but the good news is they come with a lot of attic space than usual. They also come with a better ventilation system and you have extra décor opportunity if you get gable roofing.

Hip Roofing their Types, Advantages and Disadvantages

Hip roofs are usually built when the higher pitch roofs are needed for example in the making of church hip roofing is usually opted by the roofing contractors as the church building has a high pitch. They are also popular on the suburbs area houses. The height of the walls of hip roofing are of the same height. The point where the two roof planes connect with an outward projection is known as the hip roof.

Types/styles of the hip roof

  • Pyramid hip.

  • Mansard roof.

  • Combination roof.

Pyramid hip: Pyramid hip is of the simplest form of hip roof. It is called a pyramid hip, which means it is in the shape of a pyramid, along with a single peak at the top of the roof.

Mansard roof: In mansard roofs there are two slopes one side of the slope probably the bottom one is steeper than the top slope.

Combination style roof:  A combination style roof is totally the opposite of mansard roof; in combination style roof it flickers from the bottom and the lower part of the roof is much lower pitch than normal.

Advantages and disadvantages of hip roof

Hip roofs have high wind performance and if you are living in an area where the wind rate is higher than hip roofs are a solid choice. Hip roofs are proven to be working outstanding in high windy areas. They require less diagonal bracing than gable roofs. Which also comes with the benefit of having insurance due to the wind resistance capability of a hip roof. These types of roofs are easy to build compared to other roofs. With a lot of advantages hip roofs also have some disadvantages, hip roofs have a lower pitch than the gable roofs, therefore they do not work in the areas where there is heavy snowfall. Hip roofs also have less attic area as compared to gable roofs because of the diagonal bracing which takes a lot of space. Hip roofs on the other side are costly too.
